What is Watauga Lake?

Watauga Lake is a large, clear mountain reservoir in northeastern Tennessee, surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains and extensive public land within the Cherokee National Forest. Because much of the shoreline is protected, the lake remains scenic, undeveloped, and relatively uncrowded.

It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful lakes in the Southeast, known for deep blue water, forested coves, and mountain views.

Distance from Damascus, Virginia: approximately 45–50 minutes by car.

How the lake was created

Watauga Lake was formed by Watauga Dam, constructed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in the 1940s for flood control, hydroelectric power, and recreation. The lake is fed primarily by the Watauga River.

Activities available at Watauga Lake

Boating

Watauga Lake is ideal for pontoon boats, runabouts, fishing boats, and personal watercraft. Its size allows for cruising without heavy congestion, even during peak season.

Kayaking and Canoeing

Quiet coves and protected shorelines make the lake excellent for paddling, especially during early morning hours when the water is calm.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Low-wind mornings provide excellent conditions for paddleboarding, with clear water and long sightlines.

Swimming

The lake’s cool, clean mountain water is popular during summer months. Designated swimming areas are located near recreation sites and campgrounds.

Fishing

Watauga Lake is known for:

  • Smallmouth bass
  • Largemouth bass
  • Walleye
  • Crappie
  • Trout near inflows and during cooler months

Fishing is possible from boats, kayaks, and shoreline access points.

Camping and Picnicking

Several campgrounds and day-use areas offer lakeside access, picnic tables, and scenic views.

Scenic Viewing and Photography

The lake is especially popular for sunrise and sunset viewing, fall foliage reflections, and misty morning scenes.
