Damascus and the surrounding Southwest Virginia highlands are well known for trout fishing, offering a mix of stocked waters, wild trout streams, and easy-access fishing near town. The area is popular with both fly anglers and spin fishers.
Whitetop Laurel Creek
One of Virginia’s most highly regarded trout streams. It supports wild brook, brown, and rainbow trout and offers excellent fly fishing. Much of the creek runs alongside the Virginia Creeper Trail, providing convenient access.
Laurel Creek and Beaverdam Creek
These streams meet near downtown Damascus and provide in-town trout fishing. They are frequently stocked and host seasonal fishing events.
South Fork Holston River
Located just outside Damascus, this river offers productive trout fishing and longer stretches of water. Access is available along Route 58 and the Virginia Creeper Trail toward Alvarado.
Beartree Lake
A 14-acre stocked lake near Damascus with fishing docks and easy shoreline access. Portions may be impacted by ongoing restoration projects, so conditions can vary.
Licensing and Regulations
A Virginia freshwater fishing license is required. Trout waters may also require a trout license, and certain areas within national forests may have additional regulations.
Damascus Trout Days
Held annually in April and September on Laurel Creek and Beaverdam Creek. These events are organized as catch-and-release tournaments with limited entries.
