WHAT IS GRAYSON HIGHLANDS STATE PARK
Grayson Highlands State Park is a Virginia state park located in the high elevations of the southwestern Appalachian Mountains near the Virginia–North Carolina border. It is best known for its open grassy balds, dramatic rock formations, panoramic mountain views, and free-roaming wild ponies.
The park provides access to some of the highest terrain in Virginia and connects directly to the Appalachian Trail and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area.
Distance from Damascus, Virginia: approximately 30–40 minutes by car.
ACTIVITIES AT GRAYSON HIGHLANDS STATE PARK
Hiking
The park features an extensive trail network ranging from easy walks to challenging mountain hikes. Trails connect to the Appalachian Trail, Mount Rogers, and high-elevation balds with sweeping views.
Wild Pony Viewing
Free-roaming ponies graze throughout the park’s open areas. They are commonly seen near Massie Gap and the highland balds.
Photography and Scenic Viewing
Rock outcrops, wide-open balds, and layered mountain views make the park one of the most photographed locations in southwest Virginia.
Camping
The park offers campgrounds and backpacking access for overnight stays.
Horseback Riding
Designated equestrian trails are available. The park does not rent horses directly.
Picnicking
Picnic shelters and day-use areas are available near trailheads.
